The cue points

What each marker does, and why it matters

VSE2 edits seven markers. Each one tells your playout system something different about the song.

Cue

Where the song actually starts. Use it to skip silence or a slow fade-in at the beginning, so the song comes in cleanly.

Intro

Where the vocal starts. Your announcer talks over the music up to this point, so the Intro marker tells them exactly how long they have.

Hook Start and Hook Length

The most recognisable few seconds of the song — the bit you would use in a montage or a "guess the song" competition.

Hook Start is where it begins. Hook Length is where it ends. The name is historic; in practice you just drag the marker to where the hook finishes.

Outro

Where the song starts winding down at the end — the last chorus fading, say. Announcers use it the same way as the Intro.

Segue

Where the next song should start. This is what creates a smooth join between one song and the next, with no gap and no awkward overlap. Usually a little before the current song has completely finished.

Overlap

Fine-tunes how much the two songs sit on top of each other at the segue.
